Amazing Makgeolli tasting experience in Itaewon! Me and my wife found this place on a quiet monday night, the bar was empty and we were able to sit right at the counter. Jazz music playing and dim lights in an elegant but not pretentious vibe. It was our first experience with Makgeolli (traditional Korean rice wine) and the owner offered us a generous free tasting. We tried many different variations and we immediately fell in love with it! He took great care in explaining to us, in good english, the tasting notes, differences and origins of each label. We decided to buy two of the bottles that we tried and he gave us a third one for free, while also offering additional samples. This bar has a very high selection of Makgeolli labels and the owner's passion, kindnes, and expertise made our experience even more memorable! If you come to Seoul you MUST check out this absolute hidden gem of a bar! Highly recommended.
I had a great experience at Horongbul. Seo was warm and attentive (and he speaks fluent English). The food was excellent, but what really stood out was the makgeolli a-recommendation. I didn’t know much about makgeolli beforehand, so I simply described the flavors I usually enjoy. They recommended one that matched my taste perfectly. It ended up being one of the highlights of the meal. I’d definitely come back and highly recommend this place to anyone looking to explore Korean food and makgeolli.
This bar is a great way to gain exposure to high quality soju, cheongju, and makgeolli. The owner seems well connected to the craft brewers and distillers in Korea. He and his staff were very knowledgeable and a pleasure to talk to. Similar experience to nearby Namsan Sool Club, which I visited a few years ago.
